WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Minneapolis Labor Review recently won three awards in the annual labor media contest sponsored by the International Labor Communications Association. The ILCA awards, announced October 28, 2024, recognize work published in 2023.

The Labor Review awards included:

First place for “Best Labor History Story;”

First place for “Best Op-Ed, Editorial or Column;”

Honorable mention for “Best Photo Essay or Gallery.”

The annual ILCA labor media contest draws thousands of entries.

The Labor Review is edited by Steve Share and is published by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.

For these awards, the Labor Review competed in a group with other local, state, and regional labor organizations.

First Place:
Best Labor History Story

The Labor Review won first place for “Best Labor History Story” for “New musical tells story of Foshay Tower builder Wilbur Foshay and his support for union labor.” This story by Labor Review editor Steve Share was in part a theater review and in part a telling of the local labor movement’s support for Wilbur Foshay, who used union labor to build and complete the iconic Foshay Tower in 1929 at a time when the anti-union Citizens Alliance dominated Minneapolis. The story draws on the Labor Review online archive for quotes and images.

This story was published online-only July 26, 2023 on minneapolisunions.org and did not appear in the print version of the Labor Review.

Because of a website redesign, the story is no longer available in its original form.
