MINNEAPOLIS — “I’ve been advocating for our union brothers and sisters at the Park Board for the past four years, and listening to them to learn the issues, so I can be a better advocate for them,” says A.K. Hassan.

Hassan is running for a second term to represent District 3 on the Minneapolis Park Board. He has the endorsement of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.

District 3 is bordered by 35W, the Mississippi River, and, roughly, E. 36th Street.

In serving on the Park Board, Hassan says, he helped to win more hours for the parkkeepers and supports fair contracts for park workers. “The union members who work at our parks, they’re a huge part of our park system,” he says. “They’re the ones who make our park system the number one park system in the nation.”

“Equal access is what brought me into the park system,” Hassan notes. He has championed issues of access and equity as a Park Board commissioner, including eliminating a $1 fine charged to youth who lost their park board-issued ID and couldn’t access park buildings.

“I want to make sure our parks are serving everyone in the city,” Hassan says.

He has advocated for programs for youth and seniors and he points to his leadership in creating the Walter Dziedzic Innovation Fund, which awards grants to support program ideas coming from the community.

“I want to continue that work as an experienced commissioner and as someone who is passionate about our green spaces,” Hassan says.

Hassan, a refugee from Somalia, arrived in Minneapolis in 2008 and immersed himself in community service and community organizations.

Hassan highlights family ties to the local labor movement. His mother is a former member of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota and a cousin works for AFSCME Council 5. “I will be honored to win union members’ support once again to serve our park system,” he says.
