MINNEAPOLIS —Ryan Winkler is running for Hennepin County Attorney with the endorsement of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO and a long list of unions.
Longtime Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is not seeking re-election, leaving an open seat.
AFL-CIO endorsed Ryan Winkler will face six other candidates in the August 9 primary election for Hennepin County Attorney.
Only the top two vote-getters in the non-partisan primary election will advance to the November 8 general election.
Winkler currently is serving his seventh term in the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing Golden Valley, Medicine Lake, Plymouth and St, Louis Park. He has served as the DFL Party’s Majority Leader in the House for the past two terms.
Through the 2021 session, Winkler had earned a 99 percent lifetime voting record on working family issues from the Minnesota AFL-CIO.
“I’m a Labor Democrat, period,” Winkler told the Labor Review.
In entering the race for Hennepin County Attorney, he says, “I was drawn to the need and challenge to rebuild the public safety system… It’s the job of government to provide a public safety system that serves the public.”
He adds, “better jobs, more opportunity, more prosperous lives, will be the best deterrent to crime in the long term.”
Winkler says he will continue the efforts of the County Attorney’s office to crack down on wage theft. “We’ve got a great wage theft law which I helped pass in 2019 — but without enforcement, it doesn’t mean much.” He added: “We need more investigative resources.”
In the race for Hennepin County Attorney, Winkler also has been endorsed by AFSCME Council 5, IBEW Local 292, IUPAT District Council 82, LiUNA Minnesota & North Dakota, Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council, Minneapolis Firefighters Local 82, North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa, SEIU Local 284, Sheet Metal Workers Local 10, Teamsters Joint Council 32, Teamsters Local 120, United Steelworkers District 11, UNITE HERE Local 17 and UFCW Local 1189.
