Bloomington City Council, District II:
Shawn Nelson: Focus on neighborhood business

BLOOMINGTON —“Most of what the City does is police, fire, public works, Let’s make sure we do it excellently,” says Shawn Nelson. Nelson won the District II Bloomington City Council seat two years ago in a special election. He is running for re-election with AFL-CIO endorsement.
“The biggest issue I’ve been looking at — making sure we’re paying attention to our neighborhood commercial areas,” Nelson says. “People are looking for more of that neighborhood experience.”
He thinks the charter referendum on the ballot to allow taprooms in Bloomington could help promote neighborhood commercial revitalization.
As a small business owner himself, Nelson says, “let’s pay attention to the small businesses.”
Nelson is a 20-year resident of Bloomington and his daughters attend the public schools. He grew up in Burnsville, graduating from Apple Valley High School. He graduated from Valparaiso University and earned his MBA at the University of St. Thomas.
This race is Nelson’s first race with labor endorsement. “I am someone who wants to have a strong relationship with the membership,” he says. “I’m open and available to talk about any question or concerns or grab a cup of coffee.”
