February 3: ‘Taste of Justice’ dinner, march will support Franklin Street Bakery Workers

From the Minneapolis Labor Review, January 26, 2018

ST. PAUL — The night before Super Bowl LII will be an opportunity to support the cause of the Franklin Street Bakery workers, who have been struggling to organize a union for the past two years.

Bakery owners Wayne Kostroski and Mark Haugen will be partying that night with the rich and famous to raise money to “Kick Hunger” with their “Taste of the NFL” charity; many of their own workers, however, are paid so little that they need to use foodshelves themselves.

BCTGM Local 22, which is helping the Franklin Street workers to organize, plans “Taste of Justice,” Saturday, February 3, with a dinner at 5:00 p.m. followed by a march to the “Taste of the NFL” event.

The dinner will take place at the St Paul Labor Center, 353 W 7th Street.
Proceeds from the event will benefit local foodshelves.

At a January 18 news conference to announce the February 3 “Taste of Justice” plan to protest at the “Taste of the NFL” event, BCTGM president Bruce Peglow said, “while we agree with Mr. Kostroski that this is a noble endeavor, we find it ironic that a man who hosts events to raise money for foodshelves would impede his employees’ right to bargain collectively.”

The National Labor Relations Board has cited Franklin Street Bakery for labor law violations but the employer continues to obstruct workers’ right to organize.
